Tolerance

Tolerance

The term “toleration” — from the Latin tolerare: to put up with, countenance or suffer — generally refers to the conditional acceptance of or non-interference with beliefs, actions or practices that one considers to be wrong but still “tolerable,” such that they should not be prohibited or constrained.

Conceptual Analysis

The English words, ‘tolerate’, ‘toleration’, and ‘tolerance’ are derived from the Latin terms tolerare and tolerantia, which imply enduring, suffering, bearing, and forbearance. Ancient Greek terms, which may also have influenced philosophical thinking on toleration, include: phoretos which means bearable, endurable, or phoreo, literally ‘to carry’; and anektikos meaning bearable, sufferable, tolerable, from anexo, ‘to hold up’.

Cultural Pluralism: Meaning

Cultural pluralism is a term used when smaller groups within a larger society maintain their unique cultural identities, and their values and practices are accepted by the wider culture.

The existence of such institutions and practices are possible if the cultural communities responsible for them are protected by law and/or accepted by the larger society in a pluralist culture.

Roots of Cultural Pluralism

The idea of cultural pluralism in America has its roots in the transcendentalist  movement and was developed by pragmatist  philosophers such as William James  and John Dewey , and later thinkers such as Horace Kallen and Randolph Bourne . One of the most famous articulations of cultural pluralistic ideas can be found in Bourne’s 1916 essay “Trans-National America”

Need of Tolerance

In today’s world we need tolerance. Tolerance is an important trait that a lot of people don’t have, but need. There are three main words that I can get out of the word tolerance that are very important to me.

One of those words is respect. Respect is a number one step in life, because having respect can get you far in life. If you want respect, you must show respect, even if you feel disrespected, you can still be the bigger person and be respectful and this is when tolerance comes in.

Peace and Courage

Another word I get out of tolerance is peace. Peace is a good thing to have. Without peace the world would be a disaster. Peace is not everywhere, and that’s because of gangs and violence, but when you see things like that, you should try to avoid the situation or better the situation. Again, this is when tolerance takes place.

Courage is another word that we need in life. It really takes a lot of courage to say “no” to bad things. When peer-pressure steps in, you still need to be strong enough to say “no”, and that is when courage is really important. Courage can also mean stepping into a bad situation, like seeing a little getting bullied and stopping it.

One of the greatest attributes of tolerance is when you can take more then what you can put out. When people are putting it on you and you just take it without hitting back, this will make you a valuable asset to society. It will mold you into a power person that will be able to help others. In my conclusion, I’d just like to say tolerance is very important in our generation right now in this day and time. If there was more tolerance, I think the world would be a better place.
